The reserve includes the high coast belt formed by fossil limestone from the Cretaceous period, the stretch of sea in front of it and a portion of the karst plateau, with a pine forest of Austrian black pine.
The climatic and geographical characteristics have favored the presence of Mediterranean and Illyrian-Balkan plant and animal species. The two main areas are the part of the plateau and the cliffs on the sea. The flat part of the plateau is climatically colder, being exposed to the Bora wind, coming from east-northeast; in this area an Illyrian-Balkan vegetation has been established with its characteristic species such as the black hornbeam, the lesser ash, the trilobe maple and the field maple, which developed within the pine forest of artificial origin of black pine. This vegetation is widespread on the whole karst plateau. The part of the cliffs instead hosts a Mediterranean type vegetation, being exposed towards the sea to the south and being downwind. A characteristic species of the Mediterranean scrub is the holm oak, associated in this case with the black hornbeam, of Illyrian-Balkan origin. In the area of the cliffs at sea there is also the only worldwide station of the Kartschian Centaurea.
Even the fauna is conditioned by the presence of these ecologically different environments. The rocks and screes exposed to the south are ideal habitats for reptiles (horned viper, rat snake, beak, and the lizards Podarcis muralis and Podarcis sicula campestris). The cat snake (Telescopus fallax) and the magnificent Algiroide (Algyroides nigropunctatus) find their western distribution limit in this area.
Among the nesting birds in the area of the cliffs there are the lone sparrow, the redstart chimney sweep, the oculus and the imperial crow.
